Description
Cherry-headed honeypot ants have a unique ability to store and distribute food to the rest of the colony. They have specialized workers called repletes, whose abdomens swell like small, round, cherry-shaped containers that can store large amounts of liquid food. These repletes hang from the ceilings of underground chambers, and other worker ants feed them with nectar and honeydew, which they store and later distribute to the rest of the colony when food is scarce.
