Description
Compressed air is an important asset for any industry but it may contain contaminated air, dust particles, and moisture which affects the performance of the compressor badly. In any application, either a refrigerated air dryer or desiccant air dryer is used. They play similar roles in the industry. Initially, it may seem very hard to choose one over another, but if we know the differences and usages of both we can implement them based on our requirements.

Let us see the difference between both air dryers in detail. Glimpse at the quick reference chart for a better understanding.
Air dryers — Quick reference chart

Refrigerated air dryer

A refrigerated air dryer is the most popular air dryer typically used for general purpose applications. Works in the same cooling principle as a standard air conditioner. The main reason for this popularity is it uses mature technology to generate pressure dew points.

It eliminates the moisture in the system by forced cooling by air condensation technique which solves the harmful moisture. They don’t require high capital investment, or they are low-maintenance machines. They are used in various industries like food and beverage, chemical processing, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. A refrigerated air dryer can generate clean air between 35 and 40 F.

Desiccant air dryer

Desiccant air dryers are designed to purify the air by using water vapor from the air. It works on the absorption technique. It can achieve very low dew points like -100. Industries that require ultra-dry air, and uncontaminated clean air should go with these types of dryers.

This type of air dryer is more expensive, both the capital investments & operational and maintenance costs. There are three types of desiccant air dryers heated, heatless, and blower purge dryers. It is ideal for the food and beverage, and pharma industry.
