Description
The image of the seated Lord Ganesha in the Tanjore idiom. The son of Shiva and Parvati, a widely adored baala-deva (boy-deity), is seated on a studded throne of solid gold. Behind the chaturbhujadhari deity rises the velvet-upholstered backrest hemmed in with gold. The same is studded with concentric rows of red and green stones which resemble rubies and emeralds, respectively. Ganesha is dressed in a brightly colored dhoti of amber silk. The foot of the pendant leg (He is in lalitasana) rests on a cushion of soft, blue silk. The throne on which He is seated is upholstered in scarlet and green. The introduction of these colors into the palette brings out the metallic shimmer of the embellished sections. The typical Thanjavur painting is incomplete without gold guesswork. The kind that you see on this page has been executed with particular skill and attention to detail. The same could be appreciated in the sheer density of the embellishment and how it has been set off by strategically placed imitation jewels.
