Description
Bhogashakti is the name given to a special roopa (form) of Devi Uma. The beauty of bhogashakti comes out in the presence of Her husband, the great Lord Shiva. It is said that bhogashakti is the form She assumes moments before She draws Him into the inner sanctum of their divine togetherness. The word ‘bhoga’ is Sanskrit for material fulfillment. ‘Shakti’ refers to the distinctive strength of the feminine. As such, bhogashakti is a portmanteau of the appeal of Devi Uma to Her lord and master. She sits on the pistil of an upturned lotus poised upon a quadrilateral, engraved plinth. Together with the tall, tapering crown on Her head and karnakundalas grazing the zenith of Her clavicles, it is a hallmark of the traditional South Indian visual aesthetic. The features of her youthful face and the curves of Her figure are emphasized in the bhogashakti-roopa of Devi Uma. The right-hand makes as if to hold the stem of a fresh lotus bloom, which would infuse the divine union with the sweetest of all scents.
